Lisa C. Peña, LM, CPM
“As a CPM, I want to continue to participate in the mission of the midwife, but also in the vision that midwives are an invaluable asset in reducing maternal morbidity and mortality in the U.S. and global health issues.
A Native Chicana hailing from generations along the borderlands of the Chihuahuan desert of New Mexico, Mother of two young adults, a traveling midwife currently residing and practicing throughout New Mexico. Lisa found her way to midwifery as a mother, a childbirth educator and birth doula, studying at the university and pursuing degrees in Public and Community Health and U.S.-Mexico Border Health Issues, which eventually lead her to pursue her passion to become a midwife; first as an apprentice homebirth midwife and then attending Maternidad La Luz in El Paso, TX. Lisa practices in the reclamation of her own traditional and cultural New Mexican Curandera-Partera midwifery and holds various certifications and experience including continued work as a midwife, educator, yogi, Reiki master healer, and studies of herbal medicine and Curanderismo with local practitioners, as well as Mexican, Mayan, and Ecuadorian Curanderas and Parteras. She also is a member of the Maternal Mortality Review Committee (MMRC) in New Mexico and is driven with a passion to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality in the state and beyond through midwifery and cultural care. She hopes to bridge her education, gifts, knowledge, and lived experiences and practice into a holistic meets clinical model of care hat bridges access, reproductive justice and support from preconception, birth, breast/chest/body feeding, postpartum, peri-post menopause, and death; in an ethical, safe space centered, culturally congruent, and inclusive manner to BIPOC families and those seeking services. I feel ready to contribute to the future and advancement of midwifery through teaching, advocacy, education, and writing, and hope to publish essays and books that focus on the cultural considerations and implications of traditional New Mexican midwifery and Chicanisma.
Brooke Prudhomme, CPM
“My personal and professional fulcrum is advocacy for joy. Whatever means that are needed to support people in reaching their fullest potential are the means by which I advocate for them. I work for birthing people and on their behalf everywhere I go. Midwifery care is the system that I work in because I know what the difference in outcomes look like with a midwife from a holistic perspective and I know how important it is to support mothers. I want this opportunity to work with bright thinkers on how to safeguard our profession as we move into the next iteration of midwifery in our country.”
