ICM Regional Workshop: Advocating for Midwifery Models of Care (MMoC)

Women and girls face unprecedented challenges to as health, education, and equality come under pressure and international systems struggle to respond. Yet powerful solutions exist. Access to reproductive health is needed in every context, and with quality care, nearly all maternal and newborn deaths are preventable. Investing in the implementation of Midwifery Models of Care can transform outcomes, improving health, expanding access to essential sexual and reproductive health services and rights, enhancing women’s experiences, maximizing resources, and advancing social and economic development and gender equality.
This workshop will present the background of Midwifery Models of Care, showcase the pivotal role of midwives’ associations and individual midwives in improving maternal and newborn health, and explore the core service-delivery elements and the meaning of continuity through reflective discussion. It will also highlight the importance of engaging with women and communities to enhance the uptake of services where midwives are the primary care providers, leading and coordinating woman-centered care.
