As wildfire smoke becomes more pervasive throughout North America, clients turn to their midwives for resources and recommendations. This course was formed from a series of interviews with CPMs in smoke-affected areas. We explore the etiology of wildfire smoke, how it affects health for the pregnant person and fetus, and how midwives can help clients access and/or create resources for mental and physical wellbeing.

Anna Humphreys, has worked in childbirth since 2012. She began as a doula in Southern Oregon's hospital system, where she first encountered clients struggling with difficult decisions surrounding wildfire smoke and their families. She pursued a concurrent Master of Social Work and Public Health at the University of Washington, focusing on climate change and population health. Her MPH Capstone was centered around wildfire smoke in rural Washington and was published in BMJ Public Health in 2022. She graduated from Bastyr's Department of Midwifery in 2024 and is in community practice in Snohomish, Washington.
