Briefing on the CDC Safe Motherhood Initiative: Sustaining Congress’ Commitment to Improving Maternal and Infant Health Outcomes

  • 2043 Rayburn House Office Building 45 Independence Avenue Southwest Washington, DC, 20515 United States (map)

The maternal and infant mortality rates in the United States remain unacceptably high. In 2023, the most recent year for which data is available, there were 18.6 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, with Black and Indigenous women disproportionately impacted. According to the CDC, the U.S. infant mortality rate increased by 3% from 2021-2022. CDC’s Safe Motherhood portfolio of programs supports a broad range of activities that seek to improve the health of moms and babies, including support for state maternal mortality review committees, perinatal quality collaboratives, Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, the Sudden Unexplained Infant Death Registry, and other critical programs.

Join American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Association of Maternal & Child Health Programs, March of Dimes, Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance, and expert speakers for a briefing on the CDC’s Safe Motherhood portfolio. The briefing will include an overview of the Safe Motherhood portfolio and discuss the value of strong federal investment in these programs to the country’s efforts to identify and understand trends in maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, implement community-based policy and clinical interventions, improve health outcomes, and save lives.

The Safe Motherhood Initiative funds several programs that support maternal and infant health, including Maternal Mortality Review Committees, Perinatal Quality Collaboratives, and the HEAR HER campaign.
