You may have seen that the “global” or “bundled” maternity care payment will sunset effective Dec 31. Obstetric providers will now bill for each maternity care service they provide.
Given our leadership’s background in health payment, measurement, and policy, the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health has been at the forefront of unbundling and elevating the implications and opportunities.
For example, this means:
Claims data will be available for the first time for all patients and all maternal health care in over a decade providing an incredible opportunity to measure whether recommended care is being provided.
OBs are no longer bound by the artificial 6 week postpartum care cut off, tied to the bundled payment.
There is a risk of privately insured patients being billed for prenatal care and patients will continue to be responsible for rising cost-share for labor and delivery and postpartum care.
Several of you have expressed interest in learning more about unbundling, the development of a new measure set, and policy and partnership strategy to prevent women and families from being charged for maternity care.
