The Epic Work of Generosity: Midwifing What Is Possible By Brooke Prudhomme I am writing to you this morning, November 23rd, from a ferry, crossing the dark winter waters between Seattle and Bainbridge Island to visit with a newborn that was birthed to their mother in the quietest hours of the night before last. Gliding across the Puget Sound, I can see nothing but fog and the faintest outline of the island as it slowly emerges. I am reminded in this moment  of the closing lines of A Brave and Startling Truth, where Maya Angelou lifts a lantern to our shared human calling, like a medieval ferryman on a mysterious night,  “We must confess that we are the possible… the miraculous, the true wonder of this world.” Embedded in these lines is an elemental reminder that what we create, what we give, and what we choose to sustain becomes the architecture of our collective future. Generosity, then, is not merely the transfer of resources. It is a soulful gesture, a widening of the heart, an offering to a reality that is yet to be born. It is love enacted. To give is to remember that we belong to one another. It is the deliberate and rebellious act of keeping our hearts open “as wide as we can for as long as we can” (D'Meza, Candice). Life fractures all of us, inevitably. What matters is how we mend our hearts while we move forward. It is through community, through the steady nourishment of good work, through choosing our own imagination, that we stitch ourselves back together. Giving becomes a form of healing and of truth-telling because we speak to power most clearly by what we choose to sustain, the futures we choose to fund, and the seeds we decide to water. To build is to participate in the continuation of life. To build is to love. This is the work of midwives AND the birthing people we provide care to. And this is the work of NACPM. Midwives stand as mythic figures in every culture: guardians of thresholds, keepers of continuity, architects of futures. In a culture stumbling through fog and fragmentation, midwifery offers an anchor, a reminder that care, equity, and community must be the foundation upon which the next reality of humanity is built. When you give to NACPM, you are not simply donating. You are choosing construction over hopelessness, love in action over resignation. WHO Publishes Maternal Well-Being Conceptual Framework The World Health Organization (WHO) has published its first-ever global definition and conceptual framework for maternal well-being—covering the period from conception through one year postpartum. The framework outlines six key domains of well-being: health and nutrition; the nature of care received; safety and environment; relationships and connectedness; autonomy, agency and resilience; and culture and values. By introducing this model, WHO signals a shift toward viewing maternal health not merely as the absence of disease, but as a dynamic state of positive empowerment and flourishing in context. Take the Birth by Birth Pledge Now Oregon Launches Statewide Newborn Resuscitation Initiative The Oregon Midwifery Council is excited to announce its role as a key participating site in the Oregon Perinatal Collaborative’s Newborn Resuscitation Quality Improvement Initiative—a statewide effort to strengthen newborn resuscitation for babies ≥ 35 weeks across all birth settings. After months of collaboration, a multidisciplinary workgroup—bringing together hospital teams, community birth providers, midwives, nurses, and quality-improvement experts—has finalized a comprehensive Oregon Toolkit for Newborn Resuscitation. This resource is now being implemented by teams throughout the state, including hospitals, home birth practices, and birth centers. Newborn resuscitation is a critically important yet low-incidence intervention, which means consistent practice, strong systems, and regular training are essential. This initiative supports those needs through statewide coaching, simulation drills, and evidence-based quality-improvement tools designed to help teams stay prepared for timely, effective intervention. Across Oregon, twenty-six community birth practices—including eight birth centers—are actively participating, standing shoulder to shoulder with hospital teams to advance safety, readiness, and collaboration. This initiative represents a powerful step forward in strengthening newborn care and ensuring that every resuscitation team, in every setting, has the skills, systems, and support they need.
