Half a Million and Counting

Mercy In Action College of Midwifery offers a MEAC accredited, four year Bachelor of Science in Midwifery program. Our college is community-based, meaning all academic courses are taken online at a distance while students complete their clinical apprenticeship with midwives in their home communities. We offer a special scholarship for our enrolled students from the people groups who lose the most mothers and babies at birth in America. This scholarship in its present form was designed by Claudia Booker and named for her after she passed in 2020. Students may apply for Mercy In Action College of Midwifery's Claudia Booker Memorial Midwife Scholarship after successfully completing the first two years of the program and entering a clinical apprenticeship. The scholarship covers the tuition cost for the final two years of our Bachelor program, with qualified students engaging in special mentoring-for-success meetings during all four years. We also award scholarships to our NARM Exam Prep online course for qualified students from outside our college. Since 2011, when we launched the Grand Challenge with Claudia and Jennie Joseph, Mercy In Action has awarded over $500,000 in scholarships to Black and Indigenous midwifery students to attend our Mercy In Action programs.

UPLIFTING: The Birth Justice Origins Project Launch

On October 23rd, Birth Center Equity launched  the Birth Justice Origins Project—a powerful moment honoring the long labor of midwives, organizers, and communities who have nurtured this movement toward liberation, joy, and self-determination in birth.

This project was guided by leadership at Southern Birth Justice Network, the National Black Midwives Alliance (NBMA), and Birth Center Equity, with contributions from NACPM’s past board Vice-President, Dr. Keisha Goode as a current board member of NBMA, lifts up the roots and evolution of Black midwifery through seven transformative papers written by leading midwives, researchers, and birth justice advocates.

Together, these works trace the legacy and future of Birth Justice—reminding us where we’ve been, who has carried this work, and how we move forward together.

AABC News Brief 10/17/25

New California Law Aims to Expand Access to Birth Centers

This week, California took a major step toward improving access to midwifery-led birth centers. Governor Gavin Newsom has signed the Freedom to Birth Act (AB 55), authored by Assemblymember Mia Bonta (D-Oakland), into law.

The new law modernizes outdated birth center licensure requirements, removing barriers that have limited the growth or led to the closure of birth centers in California. By making it easier to open and sustain birth centers across the state. This change addresses a long-standing shortage of licensed facilities and aims to improve access to culturally concordant, community-based maternity care—especially for Black, Indigenous, and rural families.

The legislation was supported by 45 organizations including co-sponsors AABC California Chapter, Black Women for Wellness Action Project, California Association of Licensed Midwives, California Black Women’s Health Project, California Nurse-Midwives Association, and the Western Center on Law & Poverty.

We celebrate the passage of this bill as a critical advance for maternal health equity and choice in California.
